Advanced level sessions needed

We have reconfirmed most of the speakers that were able to speak on Mar 25 had the event taken place then, but unfortunately there are now a few spots left to fill for the postponed date of May 27.

Some suggestions for Advanced Level topics that we’re hoping to see:

  • Working with International Clients
  • Media Relations
  • Collaborating with Competitors for Larger Projects
  • Changing Careers and Starting As a Freelancer All Over Again
  • Sales and Marketing for Freelancers
  • Building a Team
  • Accelerating Customer Service   (this would be great as a panel discussion)
  • Maintaining Passion and Innovation After Years of Freelancing
  • Refining a Portfolio

If you’d like to deliver or facilitate a session, go to http://bit.ly/FLCTO2suggestions and enter a brief description. Speakers are attendees first, so a paid registration is required to be considered for a spot on the agenda.

The full schedule will be posted very soon!

…and we’re back! FLCTO2 has a new date and location!

Thank you for your patience and understanding about the situation we were in when we scheduled FLCTO2 in Mar. We now have a great new location and date and happy to say that freelancecampTO2 lives on.

We’ll be housed at the Bahen Centre at U of T at 40 St George St, just one building north of College. Steve Slaunwhite has confirmed his availability as the keynote address for the new date and we’ll be re-confirming the schedule with all of the speakers and hope to be able to post the final schedule very soon. Meanwhile registration has resumed at http://bit.ly/FLCTO2registration.

See you on May 27!

FLCTO2 will be postponed

We really didn’t want it to come to this, but tried as we might we just couldn’t find a venue to host us on Sun that was either available, affordable, or the right size.  And so, we need to postpone freelancecampTO and I’m working on a few venues for mid- to late-Apr and will make that announcement as soon as possible.

I repeat: freelancecampTO2 has been postponed.

The upside is that many of you were eager to help out offering so many really great suggestions, some off the wall suggestions (a park! too bad it won’t be warm enough.), and many tried and true suggestions that were already top of my list. I couldn’t respond to everyone given how much legwork I was doing to make the event a go for Sun, but I do appreciate all of your suggestions.

A message will be sent out to all attendees about an option to get a refund if that is what you ultimately want. Otherwise your tickets will be valid for the rescheduled date and location. Any new tickets that will be sold might be a bit more expensive to cover new venue costs.

More details when I can.

Labour dispute at City Hall – new venue needed ASAP!

Yesterday the inside workers for the City voted in favour of strike action that could happen as early as Sat, and though they say they won’t necessarily walk off the job, we can’t wait until Sat to see if the venue will be available on Sun for freelancecampTO.

Do you have a venue that could help? We’re looking for:

  • Space for 200ppl in one room
  • 4 breakout rooms for up to 50ppl each
  • Wifi and projectors in all rooms  (though we could provide this if need be)
  • preferably be allowed to bring in our own food for lunch

The venue will be noted as a venue sponsor and receive all of the benefits of a Gold level sponsor, plus will have our unending thanks for saving this event.

We have been actively looking for a venue, but we are certain that we can find something suitable with the help of the community.

If you have space available that is easy to get to and along a major transit route, please get in touch right away to freelancecampTO@gmail.com or rachel@camaraderie.ca

What to bring to FLCTO2

If you’re new to freelancecampTO this year, you might be wondering what you  should bring to make the most of your day. While the list is totally up to you, these are the basics that we recommend:

Business cards

Be sure to bring a stack of business cards so that those you meet can get in touch with you after the event and you can keep them in your network. How many is hard to say. Will you really get to meet 100people? 200people? more? You decide how many to bring, but more if far better than not enough.

It’s not all about you, though. If you’re truly interested in what others do and how you can help them, you’ll be collecting a number of business cards too, so be sure to have somewhere you can put their cards.

A sample of your work

This could be a physical item (a small portfolio or a product sample)  or a bookmark on your laptop or tablet so that you can show others what you do. We don’t recommend bringing samples to give away, though. Not only will that be a burden to carry around, but if someone wants a sample then it’s a great reason to ask for their business card and have something to send them as a follow up.

Something to take notes

A laptop, notepad, tablet, smartphone, etc is handy to have since it is a day of learning and you’ll probably want to write some things down. Be sure to charge it up the night before! You are responsible for your own items, so keep an eye on your things.

Charger cables

It’s a long day and you might run out of juice for your phone, laptop, or tablet, so be sure to pack your charger cables. You might also want to consider attaching a label to your charger so that you know for sure which one is yours if you happen to plug in to the same outlet with the same charger as someone else.

A pen or two

At the very least you might want to write notes on business cards that you collect throughout the day so that you know what you can follow up on, but you might find other opportunities where you need a pen. Pack two in case something happens to your first one.

A water bottle

Stay hydrated! You’ll feel more alert if you stay hydrated throughout the day.

Please note: there are some rooms that will be clearly marked as no food or drinks allowed, and that includes water. Please adhere these signs and keep your water bottles shut tight and in your bag while in those rooms.

A light sweater

Just in case you find a room a bit too cool, it’s better to be prepared so that you can focus rather than be distracted by the temperature. And hey, it’s the end of Mar so the weather could be anything, really.

Glasses

If you wear glasses only occasionally, it’s best to bring them along because you just don’t know where you’ll end up sitting in any given session. (Although another tip is to ensure you arrive early at a session you really want to attend so that you can choose the best seat for your needs)

Registration for FLCTO2 is now open

Big announcement day!

First of all, registration is now open! Earlybird tickets are $17.34 until Mar 2, 2012, then $22.44 thereafter. Cost includes tax and event listing fee.

Secondly, new this year is the addition of a keynote speaker. We’re so happy to have author and small business coach Steve Slaunwhite speak just after lunch.

And lastly, we couldn’t have an event of this size without the generous support of Enterprise Toronto as our venue sponsor to hold this event at Toronto City Hall. It’s a building that is available for a range of events such as this, and we’ll have free reign of the Council Chambers and committee rooms.

We hope to see you at freelancecampTO2 on Mar 25!
